caM [08 Sep 2007|10:53pm]

I got my MacPro a couple days ago, it's amazing. I never realized how much I dislike Windows.

Now I'm in the process of getting my shiny new Mac all loaded up with software and I have a couple of questions for you Mac users.

What apps do you use for:
Bittorent downloadz (I've heard of Transmission, Bits on Wheels, xTorrent, Azureus, uTorrent)
Virus Protection (is it even needed?)

... I guess that's it. If you can think of any other cool apps too let me know.

Fun Facts With Dustin [04 Aug 2007|02:07pm]
Did you know:

You can kill 99.9% of germs and bacteria on your dish sponge by simply microwaving it for 1 minute. Just make sure the sponge is wet before you do it, because if it isn't, a hole will burn in the middle and you'll search for 5 minutes looking for the source of the smell before remembering that you microwaved a sponge.

On death [04 Aug 2007|12:43pm]
At my age(21, for you uninformed readers) death normally does not occupy my thoughts. Although I would say that my interests in science, the future, and theoretical and philosophical questions probably lead me to ponder the afterlife more than most people.

I was raised in a very Christian family, church every Sunday, bible studies every Wednesday, and various other church related activities though out the week. I had been questioning my religion for some time, but it wasn't until the age of 16 when it became apparent to me that, not only did I hold just one set of beliefs, but just about everything I had been taught about other religions, ideas, or philosophies were taught through the veil of Christianity. How could I dismiss other peoples views if I didn't even know what they believed? It was about this time that I stopped going to church; the overt hypocrisies of my Christian friends (including myself), the resounding questions with no answers (except faith), and Christianity's narrow minded view of the rest of the worlds beliefs, led me to seek different avenues to the great question of life. This is not to say that I completely disregard Christianity as a possibility for answers, but rather, since it was pretty much the only system of belief I had known, I'd much rather study others before trying to, ultimately, decide what I believe.

I have, since then, moved farther away from doctrineal religion. My quest for answers, thus far, has led me only to more questions. The more you know, the less you know; and the less you know, the more you think you know. I'm at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding the mysteries of life, but my quest for knowledge and desire to know the answers to the most poignant questions of our time will, no doubt, keep me searching for... probably my whole life.

Luckily for me, we are at a time where death from old age will soon be a thing of the past. I would not be surprised in the least if, within out lifetime, humanity will fundamentally change when death becomes something chosen, rather than forced upon us due to the constraints of our biological bodies.

This is a, horribly designed, but fairly accurate portrayal of technical advancement of the human race (omitting the last decade). The exponential increase of computational power and the ever expanding presence of computer technology in our lives will only continue to expand. Singularity is what we are moving towards. The lines will blur between human and machine, augmented and physical reality, life and death. I can't wait.

This is assuming I don't kill myself before we make the transition.

Yesterday I was returning some DVD's to Blockbuster, when I turned around after dropping them through the return slot my car was no longer where I had parked it; this is strange because, typically, my car doesn't disappear. I then saw my car being driven out of the parking lot when I realized nobody was in it... oh shit, I left it in neural. So I darted after the one tone, rolling hunk of metal while fishing my keys out of my pocket. Thankfully, I managed to jump in an pull the hand break before any damage was done. Needless to say I left (not fled) the scene shortly thereafter; it wasn't my finest moment.

I've done a lot of stupid things in my life, it surprises me that ANYONE survives past the age of even 12. Who knows, maybe we'll live forever.

on birth [16 Jul 2007|01:21pm]
The birthing process seems very alien to me (not the sex part, but pretty much everything else). Think about it, the male transfers his biological material to the female, once the egg is fertalized a tiny creature begins to grow in the female's body, gestating, feeding off it's host until it grows too large and must be expelled.

I remember flipping though the tv channels and stopping on the Discovery channel only long enough to see a fat naked person lying on a table, screaming, as a tiny, bloody, crying person was being pulled from her torso. It scarred me for a while. I guess Discovery channel could show everything because it was educational... and horrifying.

More movies and shit [09 Jul 2007|10:53am]
I've watched these recently, and so should you.

The Fountain: The best movie of 2006 and one of the best movies I have ever seen. If you liked 2001 or just want a good brainfuck this movie is for you.

★★★★★

Brick: A contemporary film noir with an unconventional setting, a high school. I typically hate movies set in high schools, but Brick is phenomenal. If you're into noir or Tarantino I would suggest you see this; I say Tarantino because the dialogue is as slick as, if not more so, than any of Quentin's films.

★★★★

Save the internet. [07 Jul 2007|03:45pm]
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has decided to abandon net neutrality and allow telecoms companies to charge websites for access.

The FTC said in a report that, despite popular support for net neutrality, it was minded to let the market sort out the issue.

This means that the organization will not stand in the way of companies using differential pricing to make sure that some websites can be viewed more quickly than others. The report also counsels against net neutrality legislation.

Below is an award-winning post by Dustin Parsons [09 Jun 2007|11:37pm]
I would have embedded this but apparently LJ sucks.

It's an award-winning presentation based on a slideshow by Littleton, Colorado high school teacher Karl Fisch.

I know everything is "award-winning" these days (hell, I just won the "Most Amazing Person in the Universe" award, given by myself on this day June the 9th of the year 2007) but Karl Fisch and Jeff Brenman definitely deserve it. Apparently this LJ post has also won some sort of award,* I'm not sure from where, or for what, but we can be sure that it's completely legitimate.

everything at once [28 May 2007|08:27pm]
There's nothing more pathetic than watching two people attempt to flirt online. The sad part is I've done my fair share of this.

No I'm not dead, and neither is this journal, it was just on a brief hiatus while I battled aliens in a distant galaxy.

Best of the best of the best. [01 May 2007|10:35am]
So my website is up and running; everyone should check it out if you haven't already.

A couple days ago Robb and I made the best chalk drawing at the Sidewalk Arts Festival.

Photo by the amazing Kiki Reese

Unfortunately the judges didn't deem it worthy of a cash prize; doesn't matter though, everyone knows the whole thing is rigged. I saw more illegal activity at the SAF than I have in my 21 years of existance; underhanded deals, faux chalk, mafia bullying people out of their squares, bribes, stabbings, people disappearing and never being heard from again. SAF 2007 was the first time I really feared for my life. Overall it was really fun though, I'll probably do it again next year.
